In 2014, I solo hiked along Turkey's Lycian Way / Likya Yolu and wrote about it in, Breaking the Fourth Wall: An Uncertain Journey Along Turkey's Lycian Way. I have received many emails -- thank you, I LOVE getting emails! -- with questions about my adventures on the trail, so I decided to share the answers (links to other resources) so everyone may benefit. Enjoy!
FAQs (in no particular order)
How much are pansiyons per night?
I mostly camped but stayed in a pension about once a week. I usually asked for pensions without breakfast or dinner as I had my own food and ate very light in the morning. The prices range, of course, but I paid an average of 30 Turkish Lira ($15 CAD) for my pensions.
do i need to bring camping stuff like pots and pans, firestarters?
I didn't bring a stove so no pots or pans either. I never had a fire. I bought food in the towns that I passed through and mostly bread, cheese, nuts, dried fruit, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, biscuits, yufka (flat bread), etc. On a few occasions ,when I did stay at pensions, I went out for dinner and ate a vegetarian food -- really delicious and inexpensive.
did you meet people along the way? will i run into people trekking the lycian way?
When I hiked (May), most sections had some people, a few sections nearest the tourist towns were really busy with people every 5 - 10 minutes or so (I prefer less people!), while others were only 1-2 people per hour, and my last three days were completely isolated and I didn't see anybody. Mostly the trails run through small mountain villages (loved this part!) where you can buy food and talk to people. I liked trying my Turkish.
which way is better, fethiye to antalya or antalya to fethiye?
I hiked Fethiye to Antalya, so I can't advise on the other direction. If you use Kate Clow's guide book, her directions are Fethiye to Antalya so that's why I did it that way as easier to follow the directions. I flew into Antalya, then took a bus back to Fethiye (and took a small bus to Ovacik where I started the hike) and finished in Antalya.
How much did you spend during your hike?
I spent about $900 Canadian dollars (2014) for the entire time in Turkey and along the trail, including a hotel in Antalya for a night at the start and a night at the finish, but not including my round trip flight Canada-Turkey-Canada.
